I got this comment this week on my post on photographers wearing jeans to a wedding:
Sag says:
Sorry but i had to comment on this one. Photographers wear jeans because they need flexibility while taking photos. It is Jeans or Track pants. Especially for a female pro. What would you rather she wear. Long skirt or dress, she could trip. Shorter lengths, there is a lot of kneeling and bending and funny angles. Pants will tear if we pose those weird angles. The Tshirt with the name is Tacky but the jeans….darling…i am not hating…but you need to be a pro to realise we even wear knee pads underneath the jeans. Just saying!!!
First, let me just tell you that I am not a fan of condescending comments. They are usually ignored. There is no need to say “darling” . If you are not a fan of a post I have written ……. come out and say what you need to say. I do not need your placation. I stand by my words. Jeans are a NO-NO.
And then you add track pants to the equation? To a wedding? For real?
This may come as a surprise to you…..my dear…. but the whole jeans during a wedding by photographers is a KENYAN thing. And as usual, I am not surprised at Kenyan photographers and their excuses. Our wedding photography standard is so BEHIND international standards and then on top of that you go ahead and try to justify wearing jeans to a wedding. Sigh.
Luckily for you and any misguided photographer out there…. I usually do my research before I write the posts where I am attacking service providers on issues. SO YES, I do have proof that out there, photographers DO go on the ground to take pictures and the same photographers are dressed professionally.
1. A flickr group discusses what to wear to weddings: Click here
2. A forum discusses the same issue
3. One of the photographer I follow shows us what she wears to shoot weddings. Oh my! Is that a short dress??
4. OH MY… another dress!
5. And one of my most favorite photographers……. in a dress AGAIN. And click here to check out behind the scenes video that shows what she wears to shoot wedding. And her husband – who is her second shooter, wears suits! I am not even asking for suits yo!
6. Another photographer I enjoy, wears suit pants to weddings [Scroll to the bottom of the wedding posts].
7. And yet, another photography forum discusses the issue.
Now everyone reading this post knows that there is no Kenyan photographer out there who can claim to have awesome pictures that the awesomeness of these pictures would allow them to be rocking TRACK PANTS to a wedding. So I ask: Is it surprising that the issue of jeans is actually rocket science? This goes to show how far we have to go as a country when it comes to our wedding industry. Our standards are WAY below even average. WAY below.
And as customers and clients, I implore each and everyone of you to demand higher standards, to demand professionalism and demand that this people dress the part because obviously, there is a BIG problem. And that is the truth of the matter.
So Sag, I thank you for the comment because it brings to light some of the issues setting our wedding industry and general photography industry backward. Dressing may sound like a tiny issue to some people but it is a tiny piece of the pie known as “professionalism“.
Lastly, I thank our wedding photographers and videographers for NOT being ridiculously dressed during our wedding [PLUG]. And they did go to the ground. And they were comfortable. And they did an amazing job. Kudos guys! Let us raise the bar in this country of ours.
As let me finish off with these two words: Just Saying.
